We have done a lot of shopping in the past two days.
Yesterday we went to Meijer to get a few things that turned into $200. yeah. This included food items, cold medicine for Stephen, batteries, diapers, bath items, a clothes hamper for Nathan, a Mickey Mouse DVD for Stephen, and miscellaneous other stuff that I can't even remember. The good thing is most of it was stuff you NEED to buy, but not very often.
Today we went to Babies-r-us for some nursing stuff for me, a "baby" for Stephen and some Preemie sized clothes for Nathan since Newborn sizes are still to large on him. We got some really cute pajamas for him to wear, washed them and put them away so he can wear them.
We also found out that I have a low credit limit on my card. We figured that out when we went to buy the stuff at Babies-r-us and it declined my card. Good thing Terry was there. Now he needs to pay off some of my card because, until he does, I don't have one and that could be bad if something comes up.
Terry went and bought the food for tomorrow's dinner (Merlot Pot Roast with Potatoes and Carrots) along with a few other things that we will need for dinner for the rest of the week. Tomorrow morning he is going to get a Sunday paper so I can clip coupons before going shopping for the rest of the food items we need. The biggest problem is going to be remembering to actually use the coupons when we go shopping. lol.
In the next week, Terry need to buy a few other things, like salt for the water softener, but then I hope we are done spending money for a bit, or at least until next week's grocery list for dinner. I don't foresee me going out anywhere for a bit (not supposed to drive for at least another week) which will save on gas money and compulsive shopping.
What are ways you save money?
buy in bulk! if you have a sam club card. or even a gordons food.
ReplyDeleteI've found that if you buy pre-made things, they're often more expensive than making meals yourself. I don't think you have that problem, just looking at your menu for the week, but I always think about it especially when it comes to snacks. If I buy 6 cookies at the store (bakery cookies) it's about $4 (or about $.66 per cookie), but I could easily bake them myself and each cookie would be much much cheaper. Also, I read in Food Rules that junk food in general is high in cost, and empty calories, but that if you make them yourself (like chopping potatoes for french fries), not only do you control all the ingredients, you see each ingredient go in, not to mention you have to put more work into making it, so you get a deterrent there too. That said, I only spend about $100 on food a month (besides when I dine out) so I know that my idea of a food budget is much smaller than what you consider a working food budget. =)
ReplyDeleteEating in pre planned and home made meals saves a lot of money. I also learned that buying meat when it is almost at its sell date and then throw it in the freezer or eat right away works great too. I only buy meat that is marked down. I also buy at Sams in bulk. That is huge savings. I only need to buy lettuce and soda at the regular store. I see what is not going fast and buy those things in smaller quantities. Stick to a list!
