Command Center

My family, mainly my two boys that are now 7 and 4, has been having a hard time lately with responsibility and behavior. So I saw some ideas for a command center. Basically a place to organize the family. There are many different ways to do it, of course, and I tailored this one to help my kids. Below is a picture of the whole thing and then I will explain each section.

Supplies:
White boards of different sizes
Sharpies, both thin tip (for tracing stencils) and regular (for filling in)
Stencils (optional)
Paper tape (optional, but a good alternative to drawing lines)
Magnet tape (or other magnet that can be cut to size)
Colored paper or card stock
*I spent just over $100 for the boards and about $30 for the rest. You can use a cheaper alternative.

To the far side is the RULES board. Every house has rules, but sometimes they get forgotten. This is a good reminder of what they are. I wanted to make it a bit more fun and educational, so I did the alphabet. There is a "rule" for each letter, although some aren't really rules. Our rules are listed below. I made this with a large white board, sharpies, and stencils. There is also a bit of paper tape, I found it at Joann's, to add more fun.
Our Rules :
A : Arrow (our puppy) needs to play too.
B : Bed time is at 8:00 pm
C : Consequences for your behavior is you responsibility
D : Dressed by 6:45 am
E : Eat all of your food everytime
F : Fluids before 7:30 pm only
G : Get your chores done so there is more time for fun
H : Hugs and kisses please
I  : I love you
J  : Jammies on at 7:30 pm
K : Keep Calm
L : Listen to your teachers at school and daycare
M : Manners need to be used
N : No hitting your friends or brother
O : Opportunities to be kind should be taken
P : PJs and other dirty clothes go in the laundry basket
Q : Quiet time at 7:00 pm
R : Remember your things at school and daycare
S : Sleep in your own bed
T : Take your shoes off
U : Use furniture for sitting
V : Voices should be quiet inside
W : Wake up at 6:00 am
X : X marks the spot, find treasure in family
Y : You are awesome
Z : Zoom zoom zoom, walk don't run

The CALENDAR in the middle is going to help keep our family on track. Typically, we just try to remember everything, or I put it in my personal calendar, but things were forgotten. I am hoping this helps everyone and teaches the kids how to stay organized. I used a "teacher's calendar". It runs from July - June for the school year. It also fits the space better because it is only the single page rather than the double common for a regular calendar.

Below the calendar will be a shelf. I am still waiting on that to be delivered and will add it once I have it. It will contain the jars for the quarters the boys earn, the jar of quarters that they can earn or lose, and the jar of magnets for their chores boards. The basics are that they earn a quarter for doing what they are suppose to and lose when they don't. Each Sunday we will count the quarters. For every $5 in their jar, they will get $1 in the bank.

The BANK will be below the shelf. This is where they can either save or spend what they earn. It is to teach them about money. Each week they can earn money for their bank based on their behavior. Then they can choose to spend it, like a toy from the dollar store, or save for something larger. This was made with a small white board, sharpies, and paper tape.

Below that is the PLEASE &THANK YOU board. My boys often forget their manners, so this will serve as a reminder. For every 20 please and thank yous, they will earn a quarter in their jar. This was made with a small white board, sharpies, and paper tape.

Last but not least are the two CHORES boards. We have been lax about having the boys doing chores. But they are old enough to help and it will teach them responsibility. These were probably the more labor intensive out of everything. I used paper tape to make lines. I made each chore by cutting a magnet and applying the colored paper, then writing the chore with a sharpie. Both boys have 9 chores, 2 of which are daily. I also cut out small pieces of magnet and put them on colored paper and cut them out to make the colored magnets that show what needs to be done when. Red means it needs done, Stephen has green to change it to when done, and Nathan blue to match his board. I cut out 45 green, 45 blue, and about 90+ red.

At the bottom of the board is the behavior meter. Excellent (green), Careful (yellow), and Uh Oh (red). If they stay in the green for the day, they will get a quarter in their jar. into the red and they lose one. They will also earn $1 in quarters at the end of the week for their jar if they finish all of their chores.

Time Flys

Well it has been a while since I did a non-food post. So some updates:

Terry is doing okay. He is getting over a stomach bug that had him down for a few days. He is also a very sweet man that bought me a gift certificate to Salon Red for my birthday this weekend. On Saturday morning I will be getting a mini makeover and massage. Other than working, he is enjoying my many meals I have cooked (some more than others), sleeping, playing with Stephen and cuddling with Nathan. I took some video today, that involved air guitaring.

Stephen is getting better at communicating instead of throwing tantrums (although those still happen). He is still wanting to hold and kiss his brother at least once a day as well as helping change his diaper. He is growing like a weed and will be turning THREE in February. Where does the time go? He will have his three year check-up at the doctor in January and I will be able to update his stats.

Nathan is getting large and eating a lot. He is up to 9 lbs 3 oz and 21 inches long. He has been having feeding marathons the last few days so I am sure he has gained more. He will have his 2 month appointment in January as well. He likes tummy time, although he gets frustrated after a while and tires himself out with trying to move. He has rolled over once already, but we are thinking it was just a fluke.

Me, I'm tired but happy (most of the time). I will be 29 this weekend and we are celebrating by me going for my mini makeover and massage, and then heading to my sister's for dinner (adults only!). We will be leaving all kids (except Nathan, because I am nursing) with babysitters that Kim has lined up. I have been working on my last two Christmas Gifts. I finished one today and started the other. I am hoping to be done with it before the end of the week, but it will depend if the yarn I ordered comes before then. I haven't worked on the birth record, my shawl, or my scarf lately because I wanted to make sure I got these two projects done. I have been doing a lot of spreadsheet work for the HPKCHC, which I am hoping to finish tomorrow while Stephen is at daycare. I am also going to be adding some more recipes (1 breakfast and 3 dinners) to the blog after this post. I will also add posts for my craft projects as I finish them, as well as a page for them. Although I will have to wait until after Christmas for two of them since they are presents.

Thanksgiving

We had a great time at Kristin's for Thanksgiving. The food was awesome and the company was great! We even talked to Brian on Skype. We miss him a lot and can't wait till he can come home from Afghanistan. All of the kids had fun playing together and they all got to meet Nathan. Matt and Brandie came with Madison and Kennedy, Terry and I brought Stephen and Nathan, Kim and Eric brought Bryanne, Morgan, and Ean, and of course Kristin's 3 (Mackenzie, Sean, and Kaitelyn) were there. Mom and Dad were there too. It was a packed house, but it was fun.

The food was awesome. Turkey, Ham, Mashed Potatoes, Green Bean Casserole, Mac and Cheese, Rolls, Fruit, Corn, Carrots, Deviled Eggs, Stuffing, Cheese, Gravy. It was all delicious. For dessert, Pumpkin Pie and Pumpkin-Chai Cheesecake with Caramel-Rum Sauce (Recipe will be on the blog shortly). We ate, we talked, ate some more and talked some more. Fun was had by all.
I hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving and I am truly thankful and blessed to have what I do!
